About this teaching resource

Choose from a variety of Mini-Books for your students to practice using high frequency words and phrases, and writing conventions as they write extended text.

Different prompts, word cards and page designs (lined and blank sections) enable the students to get their ideas down on paper more easily. Use the ‘Teacher Modelling’ books with attached high frequency words to model your own writing in a blank Big Book. Make a class Big Book.

  • Print off the Mini-Books that suit the activity you are working on with the students
  • Model how you might use the Mini-Books using the ‘Teacher Modelling’ Mini Books enlarged and printed onto A3 sheets and made into a Big Book
  • Have students practice with you
  • Have students practice independently in their own Mini-Books
  • Have students share how the Mini-Books helped them as a writer
  • As you introduce different Mini-Books with different activities, gradually allow students more independence and flexibility in which Mini-Books they use for any new activity
  • Bring the whole class back to one particular Mini-Books if you think a particular activity warrants it.
  • Enable: Offer small group support for those writers/thinkers who require more guided practice in using a particular Mini-Book
  • Use coloured paper sometimes
  • Have individual students use the Mini-Book within their normal Bookmaking or Writer’s Notebook work
  • Make a High Frequency Phrase class Big Book using different prompts provided, different Paper Choice offerings, and high frequency word cards provided, to make each book

‘Mini-Books’ include: Prompts like “Here it Is’, ‘What Can I Do?’, ‘This Is My Family’. Mini-Books come with space for students to write and draw their ideas. Mini-Books are in half A4 size.

‘Teacher Modelling’ books include: Prompts for writing. Modelling books that can be enlarged to A3 and glued into a blank Big Book. High Frequency word cards such as ‘this’, ‘is’, ‘the’, ‘a’.

‘High Frequency Phrase Class Books’ include: Prompts for writing, High Frequency word cards, pages for writing and drawing, different Paper Choices

‘How to Make a Mini-Book’ resource includes: List of items needed to make a Mini-Book. Steps required in making a Mini-Book:

  1. Read the title and write your name on the cover  
  2. Practice what you will write by saying it first
  3. Write a sentence and draw a picture on each page  
  4. Use your Good Writer goal

ACELA1817: Know how to read and write some high-frequency words and other familiar words.

ACELY1649: Read decodable and predictable texts, practising phrasing and fluency, and monitor meaning using concepts about print and emerging contextual, semantic, grammatical and phonic knowledge.

Year 1 

ACELA1821: Use visual memory to read and write high-frequency words 

ACELY1659: Read decodable and predictable texts using developing phrasing, fluency, contextual, semantic, grammatical and phonic knowledge and emerging text processing strategies, for example prediction, monitoring meaning and re-reading.

Year 2  

ACELA1823: Use knowledge of letter patterns and morphemes to read and write high-frequency words and words whose spelling is not predictable from their sounds.

ACELY1669: Read less predictable texts with phrasing and fluency by combining contextual, semantic, grammatical and phonic knowledge using text processing strategies, for example monitoring meaning, predicting, rereading and self-correcting.
