About this teaching resource
What do you really know about your students as spellers?
Gain a powerful insight into their attitudes, understandings and strategies by asking them. This Spelling Survey for Year 6 will give you information that isn't revealed through a standardised test.
Why would this kind of information be important or even useful? Because it will put you right in the picture of what the students sitting right in front of you need.
Spelling Surveys are simple and effective ways to gather this information.
How To:
- Choose the survey to suit your Year Level.
- Interview students using the ‘Tell me …’ prompts and record the responses.
- Alternatively, survey your older students by having them record the information themselves.
- Or maybe you’ll use a mixture of both.
- The Class Tracking Grids (included) can help you organise key information about each student.
- Consider storing the Survey/Interview in each child’s Word Study Journals or similar.
This record will not only give you authentic information to inform your teaching, but will give students a record of what they can articulate about themselves as a speller. I wonder if they’ve ever been asked before?
