About this teaching resource

This unique resource, The Workshop Model and High Impact Teaching Strategies (H.I.T.S.), shows how a highly effective lesson structure incorporates high impact teaching strategies (Hattie) to provide every child with the learning opportunities they need every day to be highly effective readers and writers.

When working with teachers and leaders, we are always working towards the best outcomes for all of our literacy learners and looking to enable highly effective outcomes.

This drives us to these considerations:

  • What are the high impact strategies that many of us are working with?
  • And how can these be managed to enable high impact for every child, every day?

In this episode, we’ll look at this in relation to the English block in literacy learning.

To honour you our listeners as authentic teachers and leaders who are pondering, confirming and considering what your readers and writers need to grow in your classroom, I have created a ‘best effort’ document showing how you cover high impact strategies with ease within a workshop model.

What are the High Impact Teaching Strategies?

The H.I.T.S. are 10 instructional practices that reliably increase student learning wherever they are applied. They emerge from the findings of tens of thousands of studies of what has worked in classrooms across Australia and the world. International experts such as John Hattie and Robert Marzano have synthesised these studies and ranked hundreds of teaching strategies by the contribution they make to student learning, including:

  • Setting goals
  • Structuring lessons
  • Explicit teaching
  • Worked examples
  • Collaborative learning
  • Multiple exposures
  • Questioning
  • Feedback
  • Metacognitive strategies
  • Differentiated teaching

H.I.T.S. requires you to draw on both your deep curriculum knowledge and your skills in assessment for, as and of learning. Applying the H.I.T.S. effectively relies on tapping into your expertise to develop and implement rich, authentic learning tasks. Importantly, adept application of the H.I.T.S. will stimulate your students to take agency for, and reflect on, their own learning.

In our podcast episode 36, High Impact Teaching Strategies? Easy, Within The Workshop Model, find out how a workshop model provides the perfect framework for the H.I.T.S.to occur in your classroom with ease every day.

The resource explains in explicit detail some of the most effective teaching that can happen within your classroom, and how it can all be managed easily within the structure of a workshop model.

This is a second draft, and we welcome your feedback.
