About this teaching resource

Purposeful Planning: Photo Examples from the Classroom

What does purposeful planning actually look like in practice? This resource brings the ideas from The Teacher's Toolkit for Literacy Podcast to life through real classroom photos and document examples from De Ludlum and Danielle Monique — two Year 6 teachers at Fairview Primary School in Collie, Western Australia.

Across five years of collaborative practice, De and Danielle have developed a meticulous, student-centred approach to writing instruction built around backwards planning, front-end loading, and transparent success criteria. This collection of classroom images gives you a window into that practice — showing the actual planning documents, critical features sheets, cold task rubrics, reading surveys, and student work that underpin their teaching.

Whether you're new to unit planning or looking to refine your existing approach, these examples offer concrete, classroom-tested reference points to inspire and inform your own practice.

Developed in collaboration with literacy consultants Phil and Sharon from Cue Learning.

Part of the Five Pillars of Effective Writing Instruction series.
