Writing Unit 4: Persuasive - Email to the Shire by De and Danielle

Planning and Critical Features Pack - Year 6

Developed by Danielle Monique and De Ludlum, Fairview Primary School

Give your Year 6 students a real audience, a real purpose, and a writing process that takes them all the way from cold task to published piece.

This 5-week unit centres on a formal persuasive email to the local Shire — a task that demands students choose a genuine local issue, research it using AI tools, construct structured arguments supported by evidence, and write in a formal register for a real decision-maker.

The pack includes a detailed week-by-week teacher plan with daily reading and writing workshop sequences, a student-facing critical features and timeline sheet mapping every submission point across six weeks, and integrated curriculum links across language, literature and literacy strands.

Students move through a carefully staged process: cold task, source collection, note-taking, planning, drafting body paragraphs and conclusion, staged editing across vocabulary, modality, persuasive devices and cohesion, peer feedback, typed revision, and a final hot task.

Writing traits — ideas, organisation, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions and presentation — are woven throughout, giving students clear language for what quality persuasive writing looks and sounds like.

Developed by De Ludlam and Danielle Monique, Fairview Primary School, Collie WA. Published on Teachific Literacy.
